한국에서는 ‘코리아 둘레길’이라고 남한을 한 바퀴 도는 길이 있습니다. 즉 동해안의 ‘해파랑길’, 남해안의 ‘남파랑 길’, 서해안의 ‘서해랑 길’, 비무장지대의 ‘DMZ길’이 있습니다. 약 4,500km의 길이로 장거리 트레일입니다. 이 길을 홍보하기 위하여 정부에서는 각 지자체에 홍보 사업을 발주하여 저가 사는 경남 통영(흔히 경남 통영을 동양의 나폴리라 합니다)에서도 홍보용 걷기를 합니다. 그 홍보의 하나로 남파랑 길 가이드 업무를 맡게 되어 진행하고 있습니다.

 

저는 한국의 경남 통영에서 ‘통영 길 문화연대’라는 시민단체의 길 대장을 하고 있습니다. 과거에 선조들이 걸었던 길을 찾아 연결하고, 회원들과 함께 걸으며 지역의 역사와 문화를 공부하고 공유하는 그런 시민 활동을 하고 있습니다. 지역의 역사를 함께 공부하다 보니 지식이 부족하여 대학원에서 역사학을 공부하고 있습니다. 늦은 나이에(67세) 공부하는 것이 힘들지만 보람도 있습니다.

 

또한 저는 지역의 도로에 대하여 관심이 있습니다. 사람들이 안전하게 다닐 수 있는 길이 되어야 한다는 신념으로 보행환경에 관심이 많습니다. 횡단보도의 연결에서 신호체계의 적절성, 어린이 통학로에까지 관심이 많습니다. 실제로 그런 활동을 하고 있습니다. 선생님 영국에서는 보행자에 대한 인식이 어떠한지 궁금합니다. 한국에서는 차량 중심의 도로에서 점차 사람 중심의 인식으로 개선하고 있습니다. 도심의 보행환경에 대하여 조사하는 단체가 있는지요?

 

저가 사는 경남 통영은 과거 정부인 조선의 수군이 일본군에게 크게 승리한 장소이며 삼도수군통제영이 있었던 역사 깊은 장소입니다. 그때의 수군 장수가 이순신 장군인데 거북선을 사용하여 일본군을 무찔렀습니다. 마지막 전투를 승리로 이끌고 전장에서 죽은 것을 두고 흔히 영국의 넬슨 장군과 비교되기도 합니다.

I am studying history in graduate school because I lack knowledge as I study local history together. It's hard to study at a late age (age 67), but it's also rewarding.

I am also interested in local roads. I am very interested in the walking environment with the belief that it should be a safe way for people to travel. I am interested in the connection of the crosswalk, the appropriateness of the signal system, and the children's commuting route. I'm actually doing that kind of course. Is there a group that investigates the walking environment of the city center?

Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do, where I live, is a place where the naval forces of Joseon, the government of the past, won greatly to the Japanese military, and is a historic place where the Samdosu Military Control Camp was located.
